The wall exploded as Scott Free was flung through the destroyed pub. As he began to hit the ground, he rolled and came up in a crouch. He winced, feeling his cracked ribs.
This fiend hits almost as hard as Orion, he thought grimly. He reached into one of the many six-dimensional pouches scattered throughout his uniform and pulled out a handful of Apokoliptian spider-tracers. These miniature spiderlings attached themselves to their target and detonate at the slightest movement. They were impossible to escape from unless you happened to have a suit equipped with Psion phase-shift technology.
He hurled the explosives at the massive albino lumbering towards him as he backflipped out of the way of a massive chunk of concrete that was hurled at him. The spiderlings attached to the monster and immediately detonated. With a deafening roar the hulking beast fell back into the ruins of the pub.
Scott turned around, assuming his work was done when he heard thunderous footsteps. Using his aero-disks, Scott flew into the air and hovered there.
“Fine, Mother Box you win. I guess I could use the help.” Said Scott Free to the sentient supercomputer woven into the hood of his costume. “I need an analysis of his physical capabilities and any weaknesses I can use to bring him down. This battle has gone on for far too long.”
With an amused PING, Scott Free’s Mother Box did as she was asked.

In all human mythology and even alien mythology there is a place where the most damned of souls go in punishment. It is known as Hell, Niflheim, the Void, Limbo and Purgatory. Its real name is lost in the eons since the First Gods walked the multiverse. To its inhabitants it is merely known as the Abyss.
It is here where the souls of those possessed by the Tears of Hel remain. They possess all the power they had in the physical world except for all the good it did them here...
Metron was angry. It is very rare when the most impassive of New Gods displayed such raw emotion. The last time Metron had felt this way, his father was slain by one of Yuga Khan’s many brothers. The only remaining piece of the offender was kept in a jar in Metron’s study.
Metron was angry now because he had been manipulated by the demon Eclipso. He had only intended to question the Prince of Darkness about creation during the time of the Old Gods but his plan went awry…
As he brooded amongst the millions of denizens of this hellish plane, his thoughts once more strayed towards his makeshift plan for escape. He had spent the better part of his exile in the Abyss perfecting his plan and calculating all possible outcomes. It was the only chance he had to escape and the alternative was not a fate he relished.
He looked around and after scanning through the throng he found the person he was looking for. With a thought, he teleported to his target.
The young man looked up at him with a tear-streaked face, a result of seeing your worst nightmares come alive.
“Ronald Raymond, I have need of your particular talents.” Intoned Metron with a grim smile.

Elsewhere in the Abyss,
Orion was at war.
The famed Dog of War was battling against numerous beings, whose appearance were pale mockeries of his own. For each he struck down another took his place.
He wanted to be free of the demon’s influence but he found it increasingly harder to remain in control.
Little did he know that it was his own anger that fed Eclipso and in turn made it more difficult for Orion to break his torment.
For those with anger in their hearts, it was easier for Eclipso to manipulate them to his own ends.
As he continued to battle, Orion fell further into the clutches of the Prince of Darkness.

The massive albino, Solomon Grundy, lumbered into Scott’s trap exactly as expected.
First he stepped into a covered ditch inlaid with Thanagarian ion mines, which served to disorient him and launch him towards Scott.
Scott backflipped out of the way, while fishing out an assortment of chronal pulse grenades, particle incinerators and other deadly weapons manufactured all over the galaxy from his suit. He whipped them at Grundy who toppled over in pain into the Inerton harness he had laid out earlier.
“Now, Mother Box, let’s see how our friend here can withstand a trip into the event horizon of a black hole for 0.000001 seconds.” Said Scott with a grin. A Boom-Tube immediately opened up and teleported Grundy away. He reappeared an instant later, comatose and eyes wide with fear.
Scott picked up the black diamond that was embedded in Grundy’s flesh and examined it. It was lifeless, the psychic link between Eclipso and Grundy shattered by the severe psionic trauma Grundy experienced in the black hole. Scott crushed it and turned away.
“It seems as if Eclipso will stop at nothing to prevent the prophecy from coming true. He sent one of this world’s strongest beings to stop my quest. It seems as if the Book of Destiny is correct once more: ‘With the aid of Chaos and Order, the Savage pawn will seal the Darkness within the strongest of prisons.’ ” mused the New God thoughtfully. Shaking his head, he flew north.
To England…

In a hidden stronghold in the highest peaks of the Himalayas, a man brooded.
This was no ordinary man. This was a man who had lived for countless millennia and would live forever due to the effects of a mysterious meteor.
He was Vandal Savage, the Immortal Conqueror, and the world was his to mold as he wished.
He had forseen the rise of Eclipso when he had stolen the Book of Destiny from Dr. Fate’s Tower decades ago, and he had taken certain steps to ensure mankinds’ survival.
He summoned one of his acolytes to him with the most imperceptible of nods.
“Contact your bretheren in the Amazon. Tell them that it is time for Bruce Gordon to prove his usefulness to mankind… And to me.” Said Savage. “Eclipso may control their souls, but I control their destinies.”
The walls shook with the maniacal laughter of the Immortal Conqueror.
