What an audacious debut!
Firstly, I loved the ties to the larger continuity of the DC2. It always means a lot to me to see the work I’ve put in elsewhere on the site reflected in other titles, especially during their debuts. Kahndaq’s story—and by extension, Black Adam’s—is one that’ll be told as we move forward, something that’s planned for later seasons of Checkmate.
Nodding toward Static’s ties to Black Lightning was appreciated, though I was suddenly torn between my appreciation of respect shown to the older stories, and suddenly thinking that some stories don’t deserve to be respected… but that’s a ramble for another time!
The opening scene reminded me of The Mummy, to an extent. Instead of two tombs having their names and contents swapped, the idea that two combatants buried in the same tomb means that there’s 50% chance that you may not find the body you want to find, and with the death of Hanif and the mutterings made by Jules upon their exit, it very much felt like that was the case!
Anyway, the coming together of the team that are kinda-sorta-Titans-but-also-probably-more-like-Outsiders was great. Everyone’s personality shone in the brief snapshot of time they each had. It reminded me in the best possible way of the original gathering of the Avengers, or the formation of the New Avengers when Bendis after Disassembled. We know from their interactions with their own minor supporting casts within the issue what these guys are about, we have an idea of their history, and some of them, we already know from elsewhere on the site.
It looks like Jump City is about to get a whole lot more interesting with this massive influx of superheroes, and that means there's inevitably going to be an influx of super-villainy too! I can't wait to see how the team dynamic plays out!

I dug this. Pilot-style stories are always interesting and this one checked a lot of good boxes: introducing characters and dynamics, giving them each a chance to shine, and setting up an ominous threat for the future. Static immediate stands out as my favorite (in no small part because I'm currently going through the animated series on the DCU app) but Traci has made a strong impression too. Plus, as a fan of the animated Teen Titans, it's nice to see Jump City get some love.
This is a strong start here. Keep it up.

Well thank you! I am a huge fan of the continuity of the DC2. For a while now I've been going through the site's backlog reading whatever stuck out to me. That is also how New Titans was conceptualized, me just really liking what I've read of these characters. So expect to see more nods to both DC2 and actual DC comics lore. [/quote] The similarities to the Mummy were not a concscious decision. However I have seen those movies several times and like a lot of other pop culture I've consumed will probably find its way into my stories. Bendis is one of the writers I read a lot when first getting into comics. His Ultimate Spider-Man, and many other runs of Spider-Man, greatly informed how I would be handling this series, after all it is about super powered youths. If you ignore the Titans in the title this series is essentially a new team so I've been drawing from all over for the cast, especially with the villains, but I've also created a lot of new characters to help flesh out Jump City. I have a lot of plans for Jump City and the Titans and I'm hoping you guys wills stick around to see me tell those stories!

The next two issue continue the pilot-style but after that the story gets right into. I'm glad you like Static and, as a fan of the cartoon back in the day, have been waiting for a chance to write him on DC2 I am glad that he stands out. As for Traci the initial pitch for the series didn't even include but discussions with Charlie led me to adding another main cast member, hence why Traci is here. But as I started writing her she quickly became a favourite of mine. I am also a fan of the animated Teen Titans so once I decided this would be a Titans team I could not think of anywhere else but Jump City to set this title. Hope you come back for more stories!
