Again, I'm not a big Hellblazer reader so I'm not 100% familiar with the traditional lore of the title, but from what I understand this kind of vibe that that series is supposed to give off: that creepy, occult, paranoid sort of horror that was big in the "Satanic panic" era (e.g. The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby). It works wonders here: a secretive cult right beneath the nose of civilized society, mixing hedonism and demon worship, fanatically bringing forth untold horrors. It's all effectively unsettling and gripping stuff.
Between all of that stuff, there's still a sense of humor to the series, engaging character beats, and a distinct personality to the book that helps it feel real and grounded amidst the horror. Really strong stuff here. Keep it up.

No worries, UDC! I’m trying to make this book as accessible as possible, and we’re putting our own spin on the lore of the characters, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve come into this completely new or have been a fan of the original Vertigo runs, it should—hopefully—be rewarding in different ways depending on your entry. I mentioned last time around that there will be allusions to events in John’s life, the usual kind of stuff like the Newcastle incident, etc, but at the same time, you shouldn’t need to read all 300 issues of the original Hellblazer run to enjoy what’s coming. I’m glad you’re enjoying the vibe, because that 60s-70s era of somewhat highbrow, almost arthouse, horror is what I’m going for. What scares me? What scares you? I want to tap into that kind of feeling, that horrible disconnect between the real and the unreal, and mainline that as much as possible. A lot of the time in these kinds of stories, we see groups of inept cultists trying to gain power or bring about the apocalypse, without truly understanding what they’re doing. I love a good old secret society, and I think that there’s a great opportunity to dig under the skin of something here. I love it when you see some elitist toff try to summon a demon to get its power, and then the demon is like “really?” and just kills them or steals their soul. That’s great stuff. Obviously, things aren’t going well for our characters right now, so maybe the cult they’re facing off against aren’t as inept as the genre usually dictates… Between all of that stuff, there's still a sense of humor to the series, engaging character beats, and a distinct personality to the book that helps it feel real and grounded amidst the horror. I’m injecting a lot more of my own sense of humour into this, and it’s a bit more off kilter and a little bit more dry, so hopefully that comes across. One more issue to go in this arc, and then a short break while I try and get my act together, then we push forward into more DC2-heavy horror stories. |
