La GARRA
Words by Don Walsh
Art by
Real Name: Yolanda Montez
Aliases: None
Status: Citizen of the United States with a juvenile criminal record
Occupation: Disc jockey, local music producer
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: Seven Soldiers of Victory
Base of Operations: Dos Rios, Texas
Height: 5'8”
Weight: 148 lbs.
Eyes: Dark brown flecked in yellow, feline looking
Hair: Auburn
Powers & Abilities: La Garra is a superhuman possessing incredible agility, reflexes and balance. Her vision is particularly clear at longer range than normal and can see at night as well as a person can see in the day (though she can't see in pitch darkness). Her hearing is also extremely acute, enabling her to pinpoint where a sound is made, and can reach into subsonic and hypersonic ranges. Finally, she can extend her claw-like nails up to an inch, with a stronger-than-normal keratin, providing her with vicious weapons as well as the ability to climb structures that are made of materials softer than brick. Her team-mate Gimmick is known to paint her nails with various home-made materials to strengthen their cutting edge or durability.
Yolanda is skilled at oration and improvisation, being a leading radio personality. She also puts her keen hearing to work as a well-regarded music producer, who could become much more prominent if she moved to one of the musical centers in the country. Even still, many will travel to get her production help. Her balance has aided her in mastering the motorcycle, and she is teaching herself investigative techniques. She is an informally taught hand-to-hand combatant who still ranks as one of the tougher fighters in the United States.
She owns a motorcycle provided to her by Greg Saunders (see VIGILANTE I), and built by Patrick Dugan (see STRIPE). It provides traveling speeds up to 125 mph and can reach twice that speed when pushed. Special stabilizers built into it matches up with her superhuman balance enabling her to perform normally impossible stunts, even at high speeds. A full-fairing built with advanced carbon nanofibers provides increased protection for La Garra when she charges her usual targets: well-armed gangs of drug runners and traffickers.
History: Yolanda Montez was raised in an orphanage, with no knowledge of her parents or her life before four or five years of age. She always had her keen sight and hearing, and as she grew up she found her agility and reflexes developed ahead of the other children (and most adults). She was a rambunctious child from early on, receiving an alarming amount of punishment for her various misdeeds. At some point in her mid-teens she ran away from the orphanage, where she immediately fell in with a bad crowd and picked up a juvenile record.
After that brief scare, Yolanda decided she wasn't about to let the Sisters who ran the orphanage be right about anything, not the least of which would be how she'd end up. She straightened herself out and threw herself into getting an education. She pushed herself into the local music scene and found her passion, as did many other people who gained a number of locally produced albums from good acts made even better. She became a DJ at the local station KRZI and settled into having the time of her life.
The exact incident or incidents that drove her to become La Garra remain unknown, but her relentless hunt for the drug ring working Dos Rios would indicate something personal happening between Yolanda and the pushers. Shortly after becoming La Garra, Greg Saunders arrived in Dos Rios to retire and crossed paths with the new crime-fighter. Taken by her spirit and ability, he convinced her to let him mentor her, provide her with equipment and a place to hide if necessary, and lured her into the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Despite all her tough exterior, Yolanda has been forced to admit she is falling in love with having a family at long last, viewing Greg as an uncle and Gimmick in particular as a younger sister.
The Future: Currently, La Garra has forced El Papagayo, the crime lord pushing into Dos Rio, to act against her. He's started with a smear campaign that radio personality Yolanda has been forced into participating, and he's got more in the works. He's determined to destroy her, and the mysterious archer who has begun working with her. Even as she and Oliver Queen try to dismantle El Papagayo's organization, she must save her new friend from himself when his own shadows rear up to destroy him.
But even if she survives all that, Yolanda is facing another challenge. She's never once cared about her past, positive she's just some mutant or freak, and abandoned by parents who felt the same. She's never sought out her past as a result, but soon, her past is going to be seeking her out...whether she likes it or not!
