I thoroughly enjoyed the debut of this team! A seeming continuation of sorts of Don's Justice League run, but unhampered by any preconceptions! This is a brilliant team-building issue, and I can only hope that Kevin and my first issue of the new Justice League Unlimited compares (/shameless). Jonni is a bloody interesting gateway character, Kendra is becoming a heroine all of her own (and I loved the line about "Hawkman and...") and I always enjoy seeing Manitou Dawn-- a character that Don has built up with love and patience, without forcing upon us like some writers would, and have, in the regular DC. Sam and Don's work intertwines so much that I can't tell whose work is who (and that's nothing but a compliment), and that cover fully compliments an astounding debut... thanks Steve! Hope you stick around!
All in all, a fantastic debut, slow but meaningfully so, and with a lot of promise for future adventures. I can't wait to see the Birds take flight, and maybe land in their own title? We'll have to wait and see how well-received this arc is... and come on, it's from the guys that brought us Gotham Girls, Danger Trail and so much more-- how can you doubt?

I really loved this, I thought the characters were cracking with personality, the mysteries presented are more than enough to make people want to keep coming back and the story has some great twists and turns.
It's a novel take on the birds of prey concept, some pretty stark differences to the traditional portrayal, yet at the same time it manages to be completely loyal to the tradition the team has created.
It's a great touch to see two brilliant creators able to blend their talents so completely here into one cohesive unit, and I for one look forward to seeing where this goes in the future. Great job!
The cover is also really sharp and helps to draw people in. Steve did a great job with this one.

OK. I just finished reading this and... wow... I dug the heck out of this. First, I really love the setup. The idea of a mysterious "benefactor" like Charlie from Charlie's Angels is an interesting one. Although, the implications of Mockingbird not being a white knight are already evident. I really look forward to seeing where this will all lead. But Jonni Thunder was GREAT. The professional with the double-edged trait of being easily engaged into curiosity despite all common sense. It is also nice to see someone who is smart but also willing to step back and let Kendra take the lead when it comes to combat. She comes across as someone who is easily underestimated (to their misfortune) Great to see Kendra and Dawn make the transition over from Justice League (more Kid Eternity please). It'll be interesting to see Hawkgirl come into her own and come out from her more famous other. She's got the drive and the chops but I think Jonni is going to show her some of the finer points of confidence and strategy. Manitou... well... what can you say about her that hasn't already? She fills the mystical corner of the three but, like Kendra, will also find the opportunities to grow outside of the big shadow of the League. Hers is the journey that I'm most looking forward to. And, speaking of learning, perhaps Zenobia will find some anger management ... and I'm going to make a wild guess here: Amethyst? That would be cool And, Steve? That cover is awesome!

What can I say that hasn't been said before? Nothing. This issue was phenomenal. I love the dynamic between the characters. I haven't read about Zenobia before, but I hope she joins the team. 5 stars for story and cover. Great work. I look forward to the next issue. Edit: And I really hope that the team gets their own ongoing series soon.

Back when the site started, our equivalent to Birds of Prey was the New Ousiders: lots of the same characters, but under a different name. So when I saw the solicit for this other Brids of Prey, I didn't think we'd be able to achieve the same sort of magic without those previously-commited characters. I was wrong. Wrong wrong wrong! This was pitch-perfect writing, beginning to end. I like the addition of Mockingbird for the Oracle role, it makes sense even beyond the avain reference -- never read the orginal Secret Six, but I can see the influences here. Can't wait for the regular title (we are gonna get one, right?)

Thanks so much for the kind words, everyone Feels good, getting this kind of feedback for my debut on DC2 (although I have to give Don a huge amount of credit, and he's no stranger here ) It's definitely good to see that our three girls are getting a good start together, and let's nobody worry that the team won't be growing very soon. It felt risky taking sort of lower-tier characters, without the same kind of star power as some of the bigger names, even though Kendra and Dawn had their exposure in Justice League. So it's a bit of a relief to see that no one's been put off by characters they don't know as well. Just gives us more room to have fun with them

Glad to see such a great reaction to part one. We have a couple more parts to go, so stick with us on what we hope is a thrill ride. We had several of the same concerns that Susan brought up: how to make Birds of Prey work when the BoP characters are largely incorporated into New Outsiders. Here's hoping (and so far, it looks promising) that we can make the concept (with a dollop of the old Secret Six espionage series that again Susan brought up) work with new characters.
Zenobia will be joining the Birds, you bet. And we'll have three new members coming along if the regular series is "picked up," and if Amethyst is part of the pack, you'll just have to wait and watch. Who will stay and who will go? Again, stick around and find out. As for Kid Eternity: maybe he'll drop by and check on his girlfriend, but is Dawn going to want him around after he split on the League (and her)? That's another story altogether.
Sam did some great stuff, and did such a fantastic job of the opening scene, and pinning down how I envisioned and sketched out Jonni and really bringing Mockingbird to life, and it's going to be a great time doing this series with her. And another shout out to Steve, to thank him for a fantastic cover to kick-start us.
Take care Don

Excellent debut of this new team! They make perfect sense together in my book. But who is Mockingbird? I know who my first guess is, and though I won't say it, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is him. DC2 hasn't seen him around in a while and I'd love for him to come back in this manor. Cover was fantastic, writing was (as it always is with Don and Samantha) top notch. 5 stars!!!

Thanks for the heaping praise, Brian, it's appreciated. Definitely a kicking cover for this issue, and can't wait to see what Steve comes up with for the next one.
As for your guess as to Mockingbird, it's an interesting one, I'll say that. I think the true identity will come as a surprise though, so keep the guesses coming in.
Take care Don

Awesome issue!
I was sold on the premise, but that gorgeous cover and this writing team make this issue irresistable.
Jonni Thunder is a charming, refreshing character--- I love it when detectives are not hard-bitten. I have no idea who Manitou Dawn is (beyond the odd DCU reference), but she seems interesting--- and of course, I love Hawkgirl, and she seems to be in good hands here! Zenobia is a great, tortured character, and I look forward to seeing her joining the team. Any chance at a time-tossed Zinda Blake joining the Birds?
Mockingbird is a delicious mystery, and it will be fun to speculate on his (or her!) identity, but I'm not sure if there is enough evidence for me to make a good guess right now... He seems a bit, well, fey is the only word that comes to mind. He may be Mockingbird, but he has a little bit of the Cheshire Cat to him, too.
Intriguing story developing with the crashed spaceship and SPIDER--- who or that is that mysterious occupant?
Gotta come back to that Steven Howard cover--- absolutely gorgeous! Each Bird has a distinctive and lovely look, and I can't wait to see what Steven does with Zenobia, not to mention future Birds!
Five stars!

Thanks for the great feedback, Dave. Jonni and Mockingbird were both excellent fun to write, so it's great to see them noticed. Dawn was a fairly major player over in Don's run of Jusice League, if you want to see more of her without waiting for our next issues As for Mockingbird, I think that's a good observation to make
