WRITER'S NOTE: With Part Four, we finally reach the end of this arc! Thanks to all involved for fantastic work and patience--- and to those readers following this story, which grew not only in length, but in importance to me: this arc was always intended to establish the DC2 Hawkman mythos for the future. But a funny thing happened on the way to the conclusion... It so happens that the first three installments are nearly of identical length--- a conscious effort, as I personally don't like to test my readers' patience with more than 10 MSWord pages. This issue, however, ran way past that! So I took a hard, objective look at it, and decided that I could actually cut a significant portion, without impeding the story, or short-changing the reader. Thus, the regular edition of All-Star Comics #13! However, the stuff I cut was not filler, and I believe is an important addition to the understanding and development of the character of Hawkman, and present it here, as well, as a special "Extended Cut"! So the readers have a choice: enjoy a fast-moving, shorter version, or dig into a more in-depth "Extended Cut", and indulge with me in the love of all things Hawkman! Hope you enjoy, and thanks for reading! David

Why wasn't the maxi-series never finished?

Why wasn't the maxi-series never finished? A fair question, Jay... The Immortal Legend of Hawkman was one of the series that debuted when the site opened, back in October of 2005, and at the time I was also writing the opening arcs for Adventures of Superman, Detective Comics, JSA: Legends of the Golden Age, New Outsiders, Teen Titans and Wonder Woman (and these were all three issues each--- except for JSA, which is another story)--- so as you can see, I had my hands full, to say the least! After that jam-packed opening, I was faced with a headlong rush to prepare the site for our first Crisis, from which the Justice League was born, and found that I simply did not have the time to do a 12-issue maxi-series justice (I was already in the middle of a 10 part Wonder Woman epic, a few All-Star issues, 5th Week Events, etc), and as the Golden Age stuff was happening prior to the important continuity stuff we were trying to establish, I had to set them aside (with extreme reluctance and sadness). The serendipity of it, however, is that the Hawkman mini works perfectly fine as a 2-part Carter Hall origin story (with an Issue 0 prologue I am exceedingly proud of!), and stands complete on its own. As of right now, my plan is to resume the Golden Age JSA series (shortly after I launch the modern day team in '08), and use the ideas I had for the rest of the Hawkman maxi as back-up stories for that title (folks will finally get to see the "Menace of the Feathered Serpent" the tale that serves as the backstory to the Lion-Mane and Feithera section of this All-Star arc).

Powerful. That's what I came away with, after I was done reading this. Very, very, VERY powerful stuff. David captured what Carter and his beloved were all about. Love. Undying love that lasts through the ages. The kind of love that we all search for, and hopefully we someday find.
This was a bittersweet tale that deserves seven stars, but five is the limit. Carter's return was magnificantly written and was given the respect that he deserved on his return. Carter was one of the orginal's and if Jay was the soul, and Alan the heart, Carter was the strength. The spine, so to speak.
For me though, this issue actually gave me a lump in my throat that I rarely get. With just two lines, right in the middle of this wonderfully written conclusion, David summed it all up:
“Do it.” Shiera whispered over the storm, clinging to him. “Finish it, my darling! Save the world.”
Carter’s heart and soul was full, and tears unabashedly moistened his cheeks. “You made it worth saving.”
That has to be one of the most romantic and poetic words I've seen on this site.

Well, David,
You, Brian, Charlie, Mark and et. al. Do so much as it is.. I can only imagine how it was. Your stuff is powerful though. Keep up the great run.

The second triumphant return this week, and this one was even better!
I read the extended cut and loved every second!
You made ME a beleiver in Hawkman, I'll say that!
One small point, just because Astar ain't following daddy's legacy, doesn't neccesarily make her all nice nice now does it?

Carter was one of the orginal's and if Jay was the soul, and Alan the heart, Carter was the strength. The spine, so to speak. That sums up my feelings as well, Brian--- though you put it more eloquently. I guess there's a reason why these guys isnspired a generation of heroes to follow in their footsteps! Thank you, sir! I've always found Carter and Shiera's story very compelling--- a love magnified by a hundred lifetimes, and compounded by the curse and their own innate heroism. This is what I tried to get across in the Extended Cut. The romance and poetry is in the story and none of mine. Thanks for reading!

The second triumphant return this week, and this one was even better! Thanks, Jay. I certainly worked hard to lead up to it, and I'm glad the pay-off worked for you! I really appreciate that! As you well know, when you have a favorite character, you want to show the world just how cool they are, and exactly why they are your favorite character. Plus, one of the neat things about Hawkman is I got to play around (however briefly and superficially) with folks like the Golden Gladiator, the Viking Prince, the Silent Knight, the Black Pirate, Tomahawk and Nighthawk! Fun stuff for a fanboy! No, it sure doesn't. After all, she is still into weird man/animal experiments (nor do I think she is entirely free of her father's legacy)... It's a safe bet that she'll cross paths again with the Hawks. [/quote]

Beautiful, lyrical writing, and an ending that brings a lump to your throat. Congratuwelldone, Dave, for a wonderful piece of writing, and a worthy conclusion to an amazing tale.
Favourite line: "Shut"... "UP!"

Favourite line: "Shut"... "UP!" Thought you might: I was channelling my inner-Charlie on that line ! Glad you liked it, Chuck! Thanks for reading, and for the feedback!

I buy "Extended Cut" DVDs, and now I read "Extended Cut" comics...life is good. Wonderful story, David. Overwhelming sense of history here (and sentimentality...but in a good way!), especially with the "past lives" flashbacks, which I assume is what got cut in the regular edition. It was great to see all those older characters, albeit briefly. For sure, the mention of a certain name has made me rethink part of a story that's in the works at the moment! ;D

Your work is fantastic to say the least. Brought a tear or two to my eyes at the end. Can't wait to see more Hawks! Thanks for your hard work!

I'm really glad you enjoyed it so much! For more Hawks, you should check out Justice League Annual #1 (but read the Justice League Vs. America mini first). Also, look out for Justice Society of America #1, coming in early 2008!

Thanks for appreciating the "Extended Cut"! The story works without it, but is richer for it, I think. Thank you very much for the feedback; it always nice, but when it comes from someone you happen to be a fan of as well, then that's something special! Besides, I feel like we are partners in the task of enriching the Hawkman mythos! ;D
