Here's the latest Planet DC2 column, plus details of this week's new releases. Details of previous and future releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome to Planet DC2!
We left last week with an unfinished interview with Don, writer of the Justice League and Danger Trail. Great guy, and a very fun interview we had. Now here's the rest:
Danger Trail
9. The characters you use in this title, to be honest, are totally new for me. I didn’t know who they were. The DC2 is a place known for its superheroes, aliens and stuff like that. Why did you want to write stories about these guys?
That’s a funny story. That was a little of me putting my big foot in my mouth. I was curious about how things worked in the DC2, after my initial introduction to the place, and so I pitched this series to Mark with characters and a format I figured would have little chance to get approved. Mark took my bluff and then I was facing a title to write. Glad I did, but it was a surprise. I picked out figures I really enjoy from the depths of the DC history that are obscured, lost to the kind of “buried” genres. Characters that could easily play a big part in DC histories these days. DC proper has such a depth and diversity of characters and source genres, that they needed a good home, I feel.
Also, I wanted a niche of my own in a way, so I could slowly adjust to the DC2 continuity and not worry about it, and sort of do my own thing without too much worry over who is doing what, with who, where. So the Thirties, and a good pulpy style, seemed to offer up the perfect place for me to head to.
10. After this arc ends, will another one start with the same characters, or what?
Right now, I have the series loosely, roughly plotted out to #16 or #17, and some idea of where it will go to through 25. There are mostly two-part stories, with the occasional longer story depending on how “big” it will be.
The line-up format will be similar to the old Defenders series from Marvel. There is a core of characters, three really, and other characters will come in and out of the series as the individual stories affect them. So King Faraday, Midnight and Speed Saunders will be my core, they’ll be in just about every story. Hans Von Hammer and Andrew Bennet take off after the first story, and Doctor Occult appears in the next one. He’ll be a little more prominent than others, but the core will be those three listed characters. But revolving around that core will be a very interesting array of characters who will pop up with varying regularity.
Other Stuff
11. Are you planning to write any more stuff besides these two? Any future projects?
I do have future projects, actually. I’ve been talking with Scott and I’ll announce here and now that I’ll be doing a Legion of Super-Heroes Year One starting in January (with Scott in covers and editing), and we’re both very excited about that.
I’ve also got some Johnny Thunder stories set for Weird Western Quarterly, with the wild west Thunder, and ideally (got David and Susan on board and excited about the notion) leading to the return of the Golden Age JSA Johnny Thunder. I have a couple of stories in House of Mystery II and Savage Tales, and down the road, there will be a Bulletman mini-series and then down the road a Whiz Comics series to support the Mightiest Mortals on DC3.
12. Any final comments, thoughts, something?
I want to thank the people who’ve been very good about welcoming me aboard and helpful in my initial endeavours. I’ve had some very good talks with these people, and it’s been a pleasure to collaborate with them, and I look forward to more of it down the road. It’s been a good start for me, and I appreciate the effort from these people. Finally, go read Danger Trail, people, and let me know what you all think. Take Care, everyone!
And that's the end.
Now that you've finished reading this, go and read this week's stories, specially Justice League and DC2 Challenge!
